Introduction

Guadeloupe is an archipelago located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, and is an overseas region of France. It is part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean and includes the islands of Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, Marie-Galante, La Désirade, and the Îles des Saintes. The capital city is Basse-Terre. The official language is French, and the currency used is the Euro.

Geography

Guadeloupe is known for its diverse geography, which ranges from beautiful sandy beaches to lush rainforests and stunning waterfalls. The island of Basse-Terre is home to the Guadeloupe National Park, which includes the La Grande Soufrière volcano, the highest mountain peak in the Lesser Antilles. Grande-Terre, on the other hand, is known for its flat plains and coral reefs.

History

Originally inhabited by the Arawak and Carib peoples, Guadeloupe was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. It was colonized by France in the 17th century and has remained a French territory ever since, despite brief periods of British occupation. The island’s history is marked by the struggles of the indigenous people, the impact of the slave trade, and the fight for independence.

Culture

Guadeloupe’s culture is a blend of French, African, and Indian influences. The island is known for its music, particularly the traditional gwoka music, and its annual Carnival celebrations. The cuisine of Guadeloupe is a mix of French and Creole flavors, with seafood and tropical fruits featuring prominently.

Economy

The economy of Guadeloupe is largely dependent on tourism, agriculture, and services. The island is known for its production of bananas, sugar, and rum. Despite being a part of France, Guadeloupe faces economic challenges, including high unemployment rates and reliance on imports for most goods.

Education

Education in Guadeloupe follows the French system, with schooling mandatory for children between the ages of 6 and 16. The island is home to the University of the French West Indies and Guiana, which offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
